Understanding the Difference of Acid Reflux vs. Heartburn vs. GERD

Posted By Author on July 16, 2025

If you’ve ever felt a burning sensation in your chest after a meal, you’re not alone. You’ve likely wondered whether that feeling is caused by acid reflux, heartburn, or something more serious, like GERD. While people often use these terms interchangeably, each describes a different stage or form of digestive discomfort.

Understanding the difference between acid reflux, heartburn, and GERD is the first step in managing your symptoms and finding effective relief.

Continue reading to learn what our team at Charleston GI has to say on the topic and when it’s time to consult your doctor.

Acid Reflux vs. Heartburn vs. GERD

You may think of acid reflux, heartburn, and GERD as similar conditions (or even the same thing), but they each have distinct meanings. Acid reflux is when the contents of your stomach go in the wrong direction. This may cause you to experience a sour taste in the back of your mouth, making you feel uncomfortable and sick. Acid reflux can then cause heartburn. Heartburn is a mild burning sensation in your mid-chest, neck, or throat, typically occurring after a meal or when lying down.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a more severe, chronic form of acid reflux. With GERD, the persistent backflow of stomach acid can irritate the esophageal lining, causing damage over time. This chronic irritation and inflammation can lead to serious complications, such as narrowing of the esophagus, which makes swallowing difficult, causing pain and ulcers. Often, people who experience heartburn more than twice a week have GERD.

All three conditions share symptoms of:

  • Heartburn
  • A burning sensation in the throat
  • A sour or bitter taste in the mouth
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Upper abdominal or chest pain

When To Seek Help

Often, people are unsure whether they should see a doctor when experiencing these symptoms.

If heartburn is frequent, severe, and doesn’t respond to over-the-counter medication, it is time to consult a doctor.

Seek care from a gastroenterologist near you if you’re experiencing any of the following:

    • Difficulty or pain when swallowing
    • Persistent coughing or worsening asthma
    • Unintentional weight loss
    • Nausea or vomiting
