FAQs for Visitors

Appointments and Referrals

Good news. You can book an appointment without a referral. Charleston GI welcomes self-referred patients and offers an Open Access Colonoscopy program. Qualified patients may schedule a screening without an initial office visit.

Some insurance plans do require a referral. Please check with your insurance provider beforehand to confirm coverage.

Insurance and Billing

We accept Medicare, Medicaid, and most major private insurance plans, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana, United Healthcare, and Tricare.

Because benefits can vary by plan, we recommend confirming details before your visit:

  • Contact your insurance provider to verify in network coverage
  • Call our Patient Accounting Department at 843 793 5182 with billing questions

Yes. This is common for medical procedures. You may receive:

  • A professional fee for physician services
  • A facility fee for the endoscopy center and clinical staff

For questions related to these charges, Patient Accounting can be reached at 843 722 8000.

Preparing for Your Visit

Arriving prepared helps your visit run smoothly. Please bring:

  • A valid photo ID
  • Your current insurance card or cards
  • A list of your medications and supplements with dosages
  • Your copayment or deductible if required
  • Any helpful medical records or recent test results if you are transferring care

What to Expect

Your initial visit focuses on understanding you and your health needs. Your provider will review your medical history, discuss symptoms and answer questions. Topics may include discomfort, digestion, or changes in bowel habits. A brief external abdominal exam may be performed, but no invasive procedures are done at this time.

Not always. Procedures are recommended only when appropriate or if you are due for routine screening. If a procedure is advised, your provider will explain the reason, review preparation steps, and help schedule it on a day that works best for you.

After Your Procedure

For safety reasons, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home after an endoscopy or colonoscopy. Sedation is used to keep you comfortable, so plan to rest and take it easy for the remainder of the day.
