Swish and Spit: The Possible Early Detection Method for Stomach Cancer
In a recent study involving 98 patients, researchers analyzed bacteria samples from each patient’s mouth. 30 of these patients had stomach cancer, another 30 had premalignant gastric conditions, and the remaining 38 were healthy.
Researchers discovered minimal differences between the microbiomes of the cancerous and precancerous groups; however, distinct variations were observed between these groups and the healthy group, as reported by Medical News Today.
The data from this study suggests thatonce there are changes in the stomach that may lead to cancer, there may also be changes in the microbiome.
The study and research are still in their initial stages, with findings not yet published in a peer-reviewed journal. Plans are underway for more in-depth studies and continued research into using oral bacteria as a biomarker for gastric cancer risks.
What You Should Know About Stomach Cancer
Also known as gastric cancer, stomach cancer is a growth of cells that begins in the stomach, typically in the inner lining. While the cause of stomach cancer is unknown, your diet and lifestyle may play a significant role.
